Since you are here, reading this article, I assume you want to learn to knit. Or you have tried to learn, but it didn’t quite work out. However, for some reason, you’d like to try again. Whatever the reason, you’ve come to the right place.
I am 100% convinced that everyone can learn how to knit. Yes, everyone!
For decades now I have found joy in knitting, in creating things using just two needles and some wool. I have noticed, though, that knitting can be very frustrating for people, especially when just starting out. Those teaching others how to knit are not always able to teach in a way that suits you. Or maybe you have specific challenges the teacher can’t help you with. Perhaps you are one of the many people who give up because they don’t feel they are making any progress or they find their work is ugly and uneven. Another reason to give up is the complexity of knitting patterns and some of the techniques. And very often it is simply a case of not having anyone around who can teach you, no matter how long that may take.
I will tell you again: you can learn to knit.
Still here? Good, let me explain.
Using my brand - Void Cat Designs - I will provide articles, patterns and workshops to help people who want to learn to knit, but have come to believe they cannot – whatever the reason.
The series of articles, patterns and workshops will be called Yes, You Can Knit and they are meant for everyone.
First, I will present a number of articles which will explain in some detail what you need to get started. You can read about the tools of the trade, the abbreviations (and there are many!), but also the different ways certain things can be done. For example: did you know there are two ways to cast on stitches when you start a new piece?
Second, the patterns are written for absolute beginners. In the Yes, You Can Knit series you will find patterns that suit the level you are at. They are written as normal patterns, because you will need to learn to read them, but the techniques used are aligned with the learning method.
Third, every pattern has a supporting articles. Don’t worry if you do not know what ‘casting on’ means. All will be explained, in detail, with photos.
Why no videos? Well, a lot of people find it quite cumbersome having to stop and rewind the videos they find online. As slowly as the video creator tries to go, if you are looking at the video, then at your hands, trying to copy the action and then back to the video, you may have missed something.
Fourth, and this is my favourite, I will show you that with two stitches only (knit and purl – the basic stitches of knitting) you can make so many things! You will not believe it until you get started.
Fifth and last: you can ask me for help. If anything isn’t clear or you simply have questions not covered in the articles or patterns, email help@voidcatdesigns.co.uk and I will get back to you as soon as possible to give you the help you need. It’s the personal approach. I think that is important so you can be successful in your knitting journey.
